Community Development and Entrepreneurship Clinic: Resources: Evaluating Sources

Evaluating Resources

When evaluating sources, consider the following:

1. Authority - who is the author? what are their credentials? where else has the author been published? does the website domain tell you anything (for example, .edu or .gov)? is there contact information for the author or organization?

2. Purpose - why was the source created? who is the intended audience? is the information fact, opinion, or propoganda? is the information impartial and objective?

3. Relevance - what is the scope? how is it relevant to your research?

4. Currency - when was the source first published? what has changed since the publication date? has anyone responded to original publication?

5. Accuracy - is the information supported by evidence? has the information been peer reviewed? are there obvious errors?
