Starting points and research tips for students working in an In House externship

What are practical guidance materials?

Practical guidance materials are resources that offer step-by-step instructions and practical advice designed to help lawyers navigate legal tasks and quickly understand complex legal concepts. They often include sample forms, contracts, policies and checklists authored by practicing attorneys that you can use as a model or adapt for your own use.

Where to find practical guidance materials

Westlaw Practical Law

From the Westlaw home page, select the Content types tab, and then select Practical law. Check under Practice Areas and Sectors for the legal topic or industry that you are researching. The Practice Notes provide quick, practical, plain language overviews of specific legal topics. The Standard Documents include sample forms, policies, and contracts (be sure to review the "Drafting Notes" for explanations of applicable law).

Lexis Practical Guidance

From the Lexis home page, select Practical Guidance from the left sidebar menu. Then select your practice area and subtopic to access Practice Notes (practical, plain language overviews of the law), templates (sample documents, such as complaints, license agreements, etc.), and checklists.
