The European Union is a supranational organization consisting of 28 member states with an aggregated GDP of approximately $17.6 trillion and a population of 502 million. The accession status of candidate states can be found on the EU website. While all Member States are part of the Economic and Monetary Union, states self-select to become part of the euro area (i.e. those states using the euro as legal tender).
